Many of us revel in the fun and fright of the Halloween season, but beyond the costumes and candy Halloween also offers a unique opportunity to honor and connect with our ancestors. Embracing traditions that celebrate our familial past can bring a deeper, more meaningful dimension to the holiday. Here are three traditions to help you honor your ancestors and create a spiritually enriching Halloween.
Create an ancestor altar
One of the most powerful ways to connect with your ancestors is by setting up an ancestor altar. This special space can be dedicated to your family’s past, where you display photos, heirlooms, and mementos that remind you of your loved ones. You can decorate the altar with candles, autumn leaves, and symbols of the season. On Halloween, take time to reflect on your ancestors’ lives, offer them a symbolic meal or a favorite treat (in case their spirit comes by for a visit while the veil is thin), and share stories about them with family and friends. This practice not only honors their memory but also strengthens your connection to your family heritage.
Host a family heritage night
Another wonderful tradition for embracing your ancestors is to host a family heritage night. Invite your family to come together for an evening of sharing and learning about your family’s history. Prepare a meal that features recipes passed down through generations or dishes that hold special meaning to your family. Encourage family members to bring artifacts, old photographs, or heirlooms to discuss and display. Celebrate your lineage and foster a deeper connection with your past!
Tell your family’s story
Halloween is the perfect time to gather family members and share stories about your ancestors. Set aside an evening to discuss family history, legends, and memorable experiences with those who knew your ancestors. You could even record these stories to preserve them for future generations. This tradition not only keeps family history alive but also fosters a sense of unity and continuity across generations. If you find it hard to all get together, or have family spread around the country or world, encourage everyone to type up family stories into an email to you that you can compile into a book and share with everyone from a distance.
Adding ancestor-focused traditions into your Halloween celebrations can deepen the holiday’s meaning and create lasting connections with your family’s past. These practices offer a beautiful way to honor those who came before us. As you embrace these traditions, may your Halloween be filled with both spooky fun and meaningful remembrance.

My alter is for my patrons, though on Halloween I set out the family pictures of long gone loved ones before bed. Some years I dream of them as if they are alive now, some years I have the most restful sleep ever. I guess it depends on if they have something to tell me or if they are just taking care of me with my workaholic self. Sometimes I have vivid dreams of others I know though sometimes its difficult to remember anything but that they were there. I truly believe this time of year that the veil thins and they are right here with us.
