Anyone else’s birthday fall in late December, after Christmas?
For me, having a late December birthday was always a struggle growing up. I hardly ever had birthday parties because most of my friends were off on holidays. Most people forgot (including some of my family members) as the days after Christmas usually blended and everyone forgot what day it was, or they were still recovering from the Christmas festivities.
As a youth, I generally got a combined birthday and Christmas present which was great for the first few years and then the novelty wore off.
These days, I look at it from a different angle. I decided to embrace it for all that it offered. I told myself that although it is at the end of the year, I get to stay younger than all my friends for so much longer. As a teacher, I always get to celebrate it in the holidays, so I NEVER have to work on my birthday. It also means that I have at least two weeks after I finish school for the year to plan what I want to do. I think they’re great reasons to embrace my December birthday.
These days, I celebrate how I want to, and with whom I want to, and this year was no exception. I spoiled myself rotten with WICKED merchandise from my favorite musical. My daughter and her husband took me out for a wonderful breakfast and gave me an Elphaba WICKED drink bottle and Glinda teacup to add to my collection. I spent the day writing chilling out on the couch. The end the day, I spent a lovely evening with close friends watching the sun go down over the ocean.
I’d love to know how you celebrate your birthday. What have been some of you best birthday celebrations?
As we move into 2025, I want to wish you all a Happy birthday (for whenever it is), and may your celebration be as extraordinary as you are!
